Batters often depend on fast bowlers to hold on to their wicket to help sides extend their batting innings but Jhye Richardson went beyond that in the BBL Qualifier against Sydney Sixers. The pacer came with a beautiful off-drive to surprise captain and non-striker Ashton Turner.

‌After being put into bat in the Big Bash League Qualifier against Sydney Sixers, Perth Scorchers had a muted start at the Perth Stadium. Though opener Mitchell Marsh departed cheaply, fellow opener Finn Allen kept up the pace with a 30-ball 49, and steadied the innings with Aaron Hardie.

But the Kiwi batter’s dismissal triggered a collapse for the home side as they slipped from a comfortable-looking 67/1 to 101/6 inside seven overs. With captain Ashton Turner looking for a partner who can stay with him and play the full 20 overs, Jhye Richardson walked into the middle.

After playing a few dot balls off Ben Dwarshuis, the pacer rotated strike to earn Turner’s confidence. But he stunned his skipper and non-striker with a majestic drive in the first ball of the next over from Jack Edwards.

With the medium pacer bowling a generous half volley outside off-stump, Richardson made a handsome stride to reach the ball before driving it down the same line. He even held his pose for a brief moment as the ball flew past the fielder at mid-off and raced to the boundary cushion.

Twitter was in awe as Richardson tried to impress his skipper and auditioned nicely for the all-rounder’s role with a gorgeous off-drive.
