Ishan Kishan has made one of the finest comebacks in the T20I side of the Indian team. Being removed from the Central Contract to play fine knocks for the team in the T20 World Cup, it has been a long way for the Pocket Dynamo. Even in the final against New Zealand, he went on to score a half-century for the team.

A player who was removed from the BCCI Central Contract after the 2023 World Cup made his comeback for the T20 World Cup 2026. Making his international comeback after two years, he also went on to play crucial knocks for the Indian team in the tournament to help them win the third title. And this player is none other than the Pocket Dynamo, Ishan Kishan.

Ishan Kishan went on to write his comeback story by himself, working off to find his way back to the Indian team. Eventually, his efforts have paid off, as he also becomes a part of the T20 World Cup 2026 winning team. From being dropped from the team to delivering match winning knocks in important games, let's see how Ishan Kishan made his comeback possible.

Dropped from Central Contract

Ishan Kishan was a part of the Indian team in the ODI World Cup 2023. Although he didn't play much games for the team, he actively travelled throughout the tournament. Following the World Cup, the BCCI gave a directive to the players to participate in the Ranji Trophy and other domestic tournaments.

He made himself unavailable for Jharkhand in the domestic tournaments, specially Ranji Trophy. Following this, some reports also said that he was spotted training with Hardik Pandya privately for the IPL. These reports went viral all over the internet, and no one knew it would be Kishan paying the heavy price.

When the BCCI Central Contracts released for the next cycle, Ishan Kishan was dropped from the same. Even after representing the team across all formats of the game, he was dropped for not adhering with the BCCI Mandate.

Domestic Comeback

Ishan Kishan did well in the domestic tournaments following his exclusion, but he still didn't get a chance to return to the Indian team. He represented Jharkhand across all three domestic tournaments, and did well in each one of them. Starting off with the Ranji Trophy, where he went on to smash a century for the team against Tamil Nadu.

Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy came out to be the time when Ishan Kishan came up to his absolute best. He also had a stellar season in IPL 2025 for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Eventually, he led Jharkhand to win the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for the very first time. And as a captain, he led his team from the front, scoring a ton in the tournament finals.

Return to the Indian Team

India had to announce its squad for the T20I series against New Zealand and the T20 World Cup. For this, the selectors had their eyes on domestic players, specially Ishan Kishan. With his performances in the SMAT, he received his call up for the Indian team in the series against New Zealand and T20 World Cup.

Ishan Kishan in New Zealand Series:

  • Innings: 4
  • Not Out: 0
  • Runs: 215
  • Average: 53.75
  • Strike Rate: 231.18
  • 100s: 1
  • 50s: 1

Kishan was initially sent to play at the third position for the Indian team, in absence of Tilak Varma. But watching his brilliance with the bat, the team could not stop him from taking the opening slot, along with Abhishek Sharma.

T20 World Cup 2026

Ishan Kishan eventually went on to give his best performances for the Indian team in the T20 World Cup 2026. With India winning the title, he went on to finish as the team's second highest run scorer. The start of the tournament against the USA didn't go in the favour of Kishan, as he managed to score just 20 runs in this match.

But in the next two games against Namibia and Pakistan, he unleashed his inner beast. Kishan went on to score 61 runs for the team against Namibia, and also scored 77 runs against Pakistan. These two knocks came out to be vital for India's wins in the group stages and eventually helped the team to reach the Super Eight stages.

Following the match against South Africa, Ishan Kishan was dropped to the third spot. Still, he continued to contribute well to the team, scoring quick thirties and boosting the team's run rate. Kishan went on to score his third half-century of the tournament in the finals against New Zealand, where he scored 54 runs off just 25 balls.
