How India Reinvented Itself After the 2022 T20 World Cup Semi-final

Four years back, the Indian team suffered a devastating loss in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final against England. Since that game, the game changed for the team to a great extent. Playing 6 multinational tournaments after that, India has managed to reach finals in all of them.

If the last few ICC events have made the Indian fans happy, there was one which even made the team change its mindset for the same. Back in 2022, India secured crucial wins in the Super Eight and Group Stages of the T20 World Cup. Advancing into the semi-final stages, the team went against England to get a spot in the finals.

But the match didn't go as expected. India went on to suffer a brutal 10-wicket loss in this game, as Alex Hales and Jos Buttler chased the total single handedly. Since then, India has played 6 multinational events and managed to reach the finals in all of them. Even as the hosts of the T20 World Cup 2026, the team has advanced to the finals.

Asia Cup 2023

The Asia Cup 2023 was being hosted by Sri Lanka, and six teams participated in the same. India was in the same group as Pakistan and Nepal, as the team went on to reach the Super Four with a win in the two games. Later in the Super Fours, India secured dominant wins over Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

With their spot in the final being sealed, the team made changes for the last Super Four game against Bangladesh. Eventually, India played the finals against the hosts of the tournament, Sri Lanka. And India was able to dominate Sri Lanka at their own home ground, as they first made them all out at the score of 50, and chased the target with 263 balls remaining.

World Cup 2023

After the T20 World Cup 2022, the Indian fans got another tournament to forget, which was the ODI World Cup. India was hosting the tournament and they looked strong favourites till the very end. India was able to top the league stages, winning all of their games and advanced to the semi-final against New Zealand.

With the match being played at Wankhede Stadium, India secured a 70-run victory and advanced to the finals. However, they fell short against Australia on the big stage. Being all out on 240, Australia chased the target with 6 wickets and 42 balls remaining. Despite being the hosts, India was not able to win the tournament.

T20 World Cup 2024

With a stunning defeat in the ODI World Cup final, India started an undefeated streak in the ICC events. It all started with the T20 World Cup 2024, where India won all of their Group stage games and even the Super Eight matches. This also included a crucial win over the arch rivals Pakistan, where India defended a low total.

With Axar Patel's brilliance, India went on to defeat England in the semi-final of the tournament. This was like a revenge for the 2022 semi-final loss against the same side. Later, the team also defeated South Africa in the finals by just 7 runs, getting their second T20 World Cup title.

Champions Trophy 2025

India entered the Champions Trophy 2025 with its undefeated streak. And they went on to continue the same even in this tournament. Sharing its group with Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Pakistan, India won all of its games to advance to the semi-final stages.

In the semi-final, India had to go against Australia, the same team which defeated them in the 2023 World Cup final. This time India won the game by 4 wickets and made it to the finals against New Zealand. In the ultimate clash, India once again chased down the target with 4 wickets remaining, winning the Champions Trophy yet again.

Asia Cup 2025

India's streak of wins continued even in the Asia Cup 2025 which was played in the T20 format. Sharing its group with Pakistan, UAE, and Oman, India was able to win all of its three games and make it to the Super Fours with ease. There, India had to go against Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

And the Indian team was so strong that no team even managed to come close to a win. Being undefeated, India advanced to the finals of the tournament against Pakistan. The match stood at the knife edge as India was at 20/3 on one stage, but Tilak Varma’s brilliance helped India to come out victorious.

T20 World Cup 2026

The current edition of the T20 World Cup is being hosted by India and Sri Lanka. And as the hosts of the tournament, India became the second team to reach the finals as they will now face New Zealand in the finals. This marks their sixth consecutive final appearance in multinational white ball tournaments.
