Is Team Indias WTC Dream Still Alive?

Bangladesh has received a massive boost in the WTC standings. With two wins against Pakistan in the Test series, the team has boosted its rank to number five. India, standing at number 6, is now having minimal chances to ensure that they reach the finals.

The WTC cycle 2025-27 has turned out to be a lot unexpected. India started off the series well by securing a 2-2 draw against England and winning the series against the West Indies. But after that, the team suffered a terrible whitewash against South Africa at home, which made their winning percentage fall below 50.

Since the series against South Africa, India has not played a single test match in the WTC cycle. But Bangladesh recently played a two match Test series against Pakistan at home, and came out victorious in both games. This has pushed Bangladesh's winning percentage above 50, causing them to rank above India.

Now Bangladesh is holding the fifth spot in the standings with 58.33 winning percentage. The question remains on the chances India has to qualify for the WTC finals. Even after an average performance in the middle of this cycle, India still has a chance to reach the finals. But for that to happen, India has to win all of its remaining 9 games in this cycle.

Our Take

Winning all the remaining 9 games in this WTC cycle won't be an easy task for the Indian team. The team is already going through a transition phase, which has made it challenging for them to even secure a series win at home. Moreover, India will be playing two away series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, where India has not won a series against the Kiwis in a long time.
