Too early to talk of the title, says Chelsea boss Antonio Conte

Chelsea's six-match unbeaten streak where they had conceded a total of zero goals was expected to be put under the test yesterday. Facing a resolute Tottenham side at home, it was the Spurs who scored early in the 11 minute through Christian Eriksen to set up an enticing contest. However, Conte's side ensured that their streak continued with a comfortable 2-1 win eventually.

The boss, though, has refused to be drawn into title talks so early into the season.

“It’s too early to talk of the title. This league is very tough,” said Conte.

Conte asserted that his side had passed a major examination by a tough side. Tottenham had resolutely held fellow title contenders Arsenal to a 1-1 draw last week, and the way Chelsea broke down the Spurs defence should serve as a major boost of confidence, especially with the team set to face Manchester City next gameweek.

“This was a big test because for sure Tottenham is a really good team with great organisation,” Conte told reporters.

“Now we are another team. We have another type of confidence,” Conte said.

Conte’s defensive set-up came under intense pressure from the Spurs' central midfield, but they held on and went into the half-time with a last-gasp goal through curler into the far post. Chelsea went ahead soon in the second half with Victor Moses scoring in the 51st minute winner off a Diego Costa assist. The scoreline could have been bigger if Moses had not skied another clear-cut chance later.

“They started better than us, with good intensity, with a lot of pressure. Also, they scored a fantastic goal. Then I liked a lot our reaction. It wasn’t easy.”

Conte was at his ebullient best at the touchline during the match and in fact appeared to have angered Spurs manager Pochettino, but the duo shook hands towards the end of the match. An excited Conte ran onto the field at the final hooter and handed out hugs to the players even as David Luiz was seen pumping up the crowd. This Chelsea team does appear to be genuine title contenders, and their next match should really tell whether they are what they appear right now – Champions.
