Champions League Round-up | Wasteful Manchester City crash out of Europe

Monaco came into the game with a two-goal deficit after losing the first leg 5-3 at the Etihad. The Ligue 1 leaders got off to a perfect start through the brilliant Kylian Mbappe. The 18-year-old was given a spot in the team after Radamel Falcao failed a late fitness test and the former took the opportunity with both hands. The youngster got at the end of a Bernardo Silva cross to give the home side the lead on the night. 20 minutes later, Monaco took the lead in the tie when Fabinho side-footed a perfect Benjamin Mendy cross past Wilfredo Caballero. 

City came out for the second half with a renewed sense of vigor as they put Monaco to the test. Sergio Aguero had some a couple of great chances to put City in the driving seat but for once, the Argentinian was unable to finish. City did get their reward through the in-form Sane who put the ball into the back of the net after Danijel Subasic had parried away a Sterling shot. But Monaco were not to be denied as Tiemoue Bakayoko got at the end of a Thomas Lemar cross to put his side in the lead on away goals.

City tried their best to get one back in the last 10 minutes but their efforts proved to be futile as Monaco booked a place in the last eight. This was the first time that Pep Guardiola has been eliminated in the round of 16 in the Champions League in his entire career. 

In the other game, Atletico came in as favorites having won the away leg by a score of 4-2. Despite a lot of pressure by Bayer Leverkusen, Atletico managed to end the game goalless and will be a part of the draw on Friday.
