WATCH | Ireland skipper Seamus Coleman suffers horrific leg injury

Coleman had an operation on Saturday morning and will now begin the long rehabilitation program to gain full fitness. The Irishman suffered the injury in the second half when a studs-up challenge by Neil Taylor caught him in the shin. Coleman has broken both the tibia and fibula bones in his right leg and had to be given oxygen before he was carried off the field.

Ireland manager Martin O'Neill told reporters after the game that the defender had suffered a "bad break".

"Seamus has gone to hospital, it's been confirmed by a doctor that he has broken his leg," said O'Neill.

"Obviously, it's a real blow to him. He's having the season of a lifetime at club level. He's a big player for us, a great captain and a great character.

"It's a big loss to Everton, a big loss to us. But he'll fight back I hope. It puts things in perspective."

Wales manager Chris Coleman said the thoughts of the Wales players was also with the Everton defender adding that Taylor was "despondent" after the game.

"First and foremost, the most important thing is Seamus Coleman. We are told that it is not so good, which we are sorry for," the Welsh manager said.

"Neil Taylor is not really that type of player, but it's a tough one for Seamus. Our thoughts are with him. I have not seen it again."
