FC Goa coach, Sergio Lobera, has heaped praise on his improved defensive side who managed to secure a spot in the play-off stage with a 3-0 win over Kerala Blasters on Monday. Lobera’s high-flying players will go up against table-toppers Bengaluru FC on Thursday at the Kanteerava Stadium.

FC Goa have had a roller coaster of a season so far in the ongoing season of the Indian Super League. The Gaurs impressed with some beautiful attacking displays early on in the season which saw them make their way high up the table early on. However, some lacklustre defending brought them lower in the team rankings. But their most recent 3-0 home win against strugglers Kerala Blasters FC not only equalled Mumbai's most clean sheet in a season record but also ensured that they would make the knockout stage in the coming weeks. Spanish coach, Sergio Lobera, showered praise on his team as he pointed out the overall defensive improvement of the players.

"It is good that we have improved defensively. It was one of the goals before the season started and I am happy about that. I think every time you improve defensively, you look at defenders or goalkeeper. But I think we have improved defensively as a whole as a team. Therefore I am happy with the way we are working defensively and also in a collective way," Lobera said at a pre-match conference.

The Goa-based franchise will go up against top-ranked Bengaluru FC, who have also qualified for play-off stage of the competition. Lobera added that it doesn’t matter if his team qualify at the number one position.

"We are playing for that first spot. But if you look at the stats, finishing first in the league does not mean anything. Anyone who has finished first has not won the title. For us, tomorrow's (Thursday) game is the same as any other game, we are playing for three points. I think in this competition, we all go through better or worse moments. Bengaluru are a great team and a great coach. I am waiting to see the best of them because we are facing a great team," Lobera added.
