Reports | Manchester City hoping to tie Raheem Sterling to new contract amid Real Madrid interest
EPL champions Manchester City have begun the initial contract negotiations with their star forward Raheem Sterling. The club is hoping to tie him down to a new and improved contract which could make him the highest-paid player at the club and ward off any interest from Real Madrid.
According to English media outlet Sky Sports, Raheem Sterling’s representatives held “positive” talks in Manchester with Manchester City’s Chief operating officer Omar Berrada and Director of Football Txiki Begiristain over a new contract for the England international. Sterling’s agent met the City hierarchy on Monday and discussed at length the current situation of his client at Manchester City. The meeting lasted just under an hour and the interest from Real Madrid for Sterling’s services was also discussed.
The Citizens want to keep hold of their 24-year-old sensation and are ready to offer him a lucrative contract to kill off the prospect of Sterling joining Real Madrid. The former Liverpool winger signed a new contract in November last year and currently earns £275,000 a week wages. Txiki Begiristain is ready to make Sterling the highest paid player at the club and his salary would certainly eclipse Kevin De Bryune’s £350,000 a week. However, City are understood to be relaxed in the negotiations and are confident that the England star will agree to the new and improved terms.
Sterling has played 18 games for City this term and has been involved in scoring 14 goals and creating another 5. The stats prove how important he has become for Pep Guardiola’s squad and keeping him at the Etihad should be City’s priority. Real Madrid met with Sterling’s representatives during the summer transfer window as the 13-time Champions League winners continue to search for a replacement for Gareth Bale who is bound to leave Real next summer.
