However, their control collapsed in the second half, allowing Monaco to equalize through a 90th-minute penalty by Eric Dier.

Haaland, who had only 17 touches, the lowest among full-time outfield players, was visibly upset, telling TNT Sports that City did not play well enough and deserved nothing from the match. He later reiterated to BBC’s Match of the Day that everyone should be as frustrated as he was. The late penalty came after a VAR review, as Monaco’s Nico González appeared to make contact with Dier’s head while clearing the ball, giving Dier the chance to score from 12 yards.

Bernardo Silva admitted he did not see the incident clearly but lightened the mood by teasing Dier about his reputation for diving, which Dier accepted while acknowledging that contact had been made. The result left City with a sense of unfinished business, highlighting concerns over their second-half lethargy despite a commanding opening performance.
