In the 2018 transfer window, Cristiano Ronaldo joined Juventus from Real Madrid for a fee exceeding €100 million, with the aim of securing UEFA Champions League success. At that time, Juventus were already dominant in Serie A and had reached two finals in five years, making Ronaldo the expected final piece of the puzzle.

Former sporting director Fabio Paratici later explained that while Ronaldo delivered exceptional individual performances, scoring 101 goals in 134 matches, his consistency created an unexpected issue. His ability to score almost every game made things easier for teammates, many of whom had already won multiple titles, leading to a drop in collective urgency within the squad.

Despite the investment, Juventus failed to progress beyond the quarter-finals in the Champions League during Ronaldo’s three-year stay. Managerial changes involving Massimiliano Allegri and Maurizio Sarri were made to refresh the team dynamics. Financially, the move also strained the club, especially during the COVID-19 period, limiting its ability to rebuild. Ronaldo eventually left in 2021, ending a high-impact but complex chapter for Juventus.
