Lionel Messi may enter the 2026 World Cup with Argentina dangerously under prepared as planned friendlies collapse. The Finalissima against Spain is uncertain, while Qatar festival matches and June warm-ups versus Mexico and Honduras were canceled. Argentina could reach the tournament with only 1 preparation game before their opener against Algeria.

For the first time in his career, Lionel Messi is preparing to defend a World Cup title, but Argentina’s buildup to the 2026 tournament is facing serious disruption. Instead of enjoying up to 4 friendly matches across the March and May or June international windows, Argentina may end up playing only 1 game before their World Cup opener. The main fixture planned for March was the Finalissima against Spain on March 27 at Lusail Stadium in Qatar.

However, rising tensions in the region have put the venue in doubt. Matters worsened when the Qatar Football Association postponed all tournaments and matches, which canceled Argentina’s scheduled friendly against Qatar on March 31 as part of the Qatar Football Festival. Plans for June friendlies against Mexico in Las Vegas and Honduras in Miami have also collapsed, according to reports from TyC Sports. If no replacements are found, Argentina’s only preparation match could be the uncertain clash with Spain.

This is not a new problem for Argentina. In November, they managed just one friendly against Angola after hosting costs reportedly reached about €12 million. Morocco later declined a proposed match after Argentina requested around €10 million. With limited high quality opponents and shrinking preparation time, Argentina risk entering the 2026 World Cup short of match practice, placing extra pressure on Messi and the defending champions.
