The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have recalled wicket-keeper batsman Jonny Bairstow to the squad for the three-match T20I series against India to replace Alex Hales. The 28-year-old, Hales, has been ruled out of the remainder of the tour after he fractured his hand during the second ODI.

The Middlesex-opener traveled to Kolkata with the team for the third ODI but will have to return home today to have surgery on his hand. Jonny Bairstow, who is already a member of the ODI team, will stay back to replace Hales in the T20I series that starts on January 26 at the Green Park International Stadium in Kanpur.

Hales injured his right hand while attempting a diving catch in the second ODI. Hales hasn't had the best of series' having been dismissed for scores of nine and 14 in the two matches. The ECB announced that Hales would be replaced by Bairstow for the upcoming series via their official twitter account.

In the absence of Hales, England management may look towards Sam Billings as the replacement for the third ODI. Billings scored 93 in the first of England's warm-up matches in Mumbai earlier this month.

The problems seem to continue for England as they have been fined for slow over-rate in the Cuttack ODI. It was ruled that the English were one over short of the normal overs. Captain Eoin Morgan, who pleaded guilty, has been fined 20% of his match fee, while the rest of the players have received 10% fines.
