English players demand changes in IPL contracts

England players with a Test contract with the English and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have to deposit 0.5% of their annual salary to their IPL team for each day they miss during the IPL while fulfilling their international commitments. 

Those without contracts with the ECB have to pay 1% of their fees to their team for the first 21 days of their absence. The compensation decreases to 0.7% per day after the stipulated 21-day period. The loss for the player is huge considering the deductions and their low price tags at the auction.

Compensation deductions are not the only losses that the players face as there are also provisions of deductions in the event of non-selection in the playing XI or injury. The IPL franchises are entitled to deduct up to 20% of the player's stay in India in the event of any of the above-mentioned circumstances.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, an international England player stayed at home this season after he was severely affected by financial losses due to these clauses. The report further states that there have been instances in the past when England players have given away their entire wages due to these clauses.

This time around, players from England have demanded changes to their IPL agreements which have stayed the same since 2009 that was marked by the inclusion of big names such as Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff, who had held grade A contracts with the ECB.

Subsequently, though, players' wages have been diluted as the ECB has modelled its international T20 contracts in accordance to the IPL agreement skeleton.
