Video | Ben Stokes shows great sportsmanship to alert umpire as he narrowly misses out on a catch

‘It’s not about winning, but how you win’, that was something that Sachin Tendulkar tweeted and the manifestation of that quote could be seen in today’s game between the RR and SRH as well. Englishman Ben Stokes was quick to alert the umpires after the ball bounced just before he could catch it.

Stokes, who was involved in a bar brawl last year and will undergo trial for the same in the coming months, is known for his raging temper and aggressive persona on the cricket field. But what happened today in Jaipur between the home team and Sunrisers Hyderabad was a pleasant surprise for sure.

Stokes was stationed on the boundary line during Kiwi spinner Ish Sodhi’s second over with compatriot Alex Hales on strike. Hales, who for the first time got a game in the IPL this year, latched on to a loose delivery from Sodhi that soared in the air towards Stokes who ran forward for a catch. The English player managed to catch the ball as he dived forward only for it to fall out of his hands upon impact with the ground.

In the spirit of true sportsmanship, Stokes immediately signaled to the umpires on the pitch that it wasn’t a catch which kept Hales on the pitch. Co-incidentally, Hales and Stokes were the two English players involved in last year’s Brawl at a British nightclub in Bristol.
