While the DRS system was introduced in the IPL to ease the umpire's job during close calls, the advanced technology has done very little to wipe out controversy from the sport. Kane Williamson became the latest victim as the Kiwi was adjudged out by the despite the ball not touching his bat.
Before the IPL, the BCCI had decided to take ten umpires and give them workshops ahead of DRS' introduction. While the intention was as noble as it could be, the outcome hasn't always been as expected by the officials. Though DRS has overturned numerous decisions this season already, it has also left bare a huge void in terms of improvement.
A similar incident took place in today’s match, when SRH and Kiwi skipper, Kane Williamson went up against compatriot Ish Sodhi. Sodhi caught Williamson by surprise as he bowled a googly which Williamson seemed to have nicked on the way to a brilliant catch behind the stumps by English keeper Jos Butler. Umpire Nand Kishor immediately raised his finger on Sodhi and Butler’s appeal. Williamson was left stunned at the decision and discussed with his partner before opting for a reviewal.
The video referral, surprisingly, signalled the umpire right, as there indeed was a slight spike in the UltraEdge as the ball passed Williamson’s bat before Butler made the catch. There was no deviation of any kind in the ball with the spike suggesting a clash of the bat's handle and the batsman's thigh pad. And an in-form looking Williamson went back to the pavilion, where his teammates looked as stunned as him, for a score of 63.
