English keeper Jonny Bairstow down with a finger injury

Anderson’s delivery swung late in the 44th over in the first session of play on day 3 and went to hurt Bairstow after Cheteshwar Pujara left it all alone. He immediately gave away his keeping gloves rushed for an X-ray, which confirmed the fracture.

While Jos Butler stood behind the stumps for the rest of the day during the Indian innings, the 28-year-old was seen having his injured finger dipped in cold water. It is expected that Bairstow can bat if needed in the second innings of the Trent Bridge Test.

"We will see how it is in the morning, it is a fracture but it's not displaced which is the good thing. We are hopeful with more icing overnight and a bit of protection. It's the middle finger and it's my top hand, so I tend not to use it much. It's part and parcel of keeping wicket, you will cop a few on your fingers. It wobbled and did what it typically does in England sometimes does, so unfortunately, copped it on the end,” Bairstow told Channel 5 yesterday.

England cricket team’s assistance coach Pal Farbrace also expects Bairstow to be fit sooner for the services that the Englishmen need from him both in front and behind the stumps.

"The doc's been working on him this evening to relieve a bit of pressure in the nail, so hopefully when needed he'll be okay. A lot will depend on how the next few days go, and the soreness in terms of catching balls on a consistent basis. We'll have to see how he goes,” informed Farbrace.

His first innings scores of 70 and 93 in the first two Test matches were very helpful for the English side and the team management will definitely want him to get well soon and return for the rest of the series against the Indians.
