In the wake of one of the most hard-hitting droughts in history, the Indian and South African teams, on the eve of the Newlands T20I, jointly donated a cheque of 100,000 Rand, or $8,500, for the purpose of drilling borewells and supplying bottled water to the residents of beleaguered Cape Town.

A drought, that began in the Western Cape province of South Africa in 2015, has resulted in severe water shortage in the area. Despite several measures, the situation is about to get critical, and experts have even predicted "Day Zero", the day on which municipal water supplies will be shut off, giving Cape Town the unwanted tag of being the first major city globally to run out of water.

Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis jointly presented the cheque of 100,000 Rand, or $8,500, to the Gift of the Givers Foundation at Newlands, Cape Town at the third T20I. The Gift of the Givers Foundation is the largest relief foundation on the African continent and is deeply involved in the ongoing resuscitation efforts in the city.

Imtiaz Sooliman, Founder & Chairman of the Foundation, appreciated the gesture, saying, "The Gift of the Givers appreciates the support from the South African and Indian cricket teams towards our Western Cape drought initiative. The generous contribution will assist us in essential borewell drilling in various areas which are virtually without water."

The funds will also be used to augment the supply of water to the homes for the mentally and physically challenged, and orphanages.
