Reports : MS Dhoni to be downgraded in new BCCI retainer contracts

As per the newly planned BCCI retainer contracts, MS Dhoni will not get a higher graded contract because he is not a part of the Test team. Earlier, the BCCI had a three-grade contract system, where most of the Test players got grade A contract, but now they have decided to switch to four grades.

India Today reported that the Committee of Administrators (CoA) yesterday had a meeting in Mumbai to discuss about the new annual retainer contracts for the new season. It seems like the new contract system will come into effect before the Indian cricket team leaves for Sri Lanka for the Nidahas Trophy.

"It's important to have the new contracts in place without which the IPL player insurance policy cannot be executed," a BCCI source told India Today.

But more importantly, Dhoni, reportedly, will not be a part of the top contract as he is not playing the Test cricket anymore. The issue was first forwarded by Ramachandra Guha in his letter to CoA chief Vinod Rai. It is also reported that Dhoni took part in the discussion with the BCCI earlier and agreed to the four-tier player contract system.

Dhoni, who has been considered as India’s most successful skipper of all-time, has been on the top grade retainer for a long time despite announcing his retirement from the longest format of the game. But he will not enjoy the same status anymore.

As per the new contract system, cricketers will be graded in A+, A, B, and C levels and those who will do well in all three formats of the game will gain more. Although players like Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin are not playing the three formats of the game anymore, they can still be in the top group because of their superior ICC Test rankings.

However, one big change that is going to happen is a player will not automatically come under the central contract system after making his T20I debut. One will have to make his Test or ODI debut to get at least a C grade contract. Chairman of the Selection committee MSK Prasad will slot players in the four grades on the basis of the set guidelines.
