Shakib Al Hasan ruled out of Nidahas Trophy after failing to recover from finger injury
Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been ruled out of the upcoming Nidahas Trophy scheduled to be played in Sri Lanka after failing to recover from a finger injury. Bangladesh vice-captain Mahmudullah Riyad will now captain the side in the T20 tournament in the place of Shakib.
Shakib had been to Bangkok after he suffered a finger injury in January, where he met with his surgeon in order to work out a recovery for a comeback to the game as soon as possible. However, the all-rounder has failed to recover in time for the tournament and has been ruled out of the 16-man squad that is set to face India and Sri Lanka in the Nidahas Trophy.
“The doctors in Bangkok said the same thing that the doctors here had earlier said. Shakib will return home on Thursday after undergoing physiotherapy there and his condition will be assessed after administering physiotherapy for a week; then we can decide if we continue with physiotherapy or go for any alternative treatment,” Bangladesh Cricket Board physician Dr Debashish Chowdhury said in an interview with Daily Star.
Temporary Bangladesh coach Courtney Walsh also reiterated that Shakib should not be rushed back to play cricket.
"We will give him the time, as long as he takes to get ready. Guys have to understand and work around that. When you have a world-class player like Shakib, you give him every opportunity to get fit," said Walsh at a press conference in Dhaka on Saturday ahead of the team's departure for Sri Lanka.
"He is a hard player to replace overnight. He does everything -- bat, bowl, field and captain. As soon as he is well enough to play, we will have to get him there," Walsh added.
In Shakib’s absence, vice-captain Mahmudullah Riyad will lead the side in Sri Lanka, as they hope to put up a decent performance in the sub-continent. Shakib’s omission meant that Liton Das earned a call-up to the national team for the T20 tournament.
