India vs Windies | Need to get early wickets to put pressure on the India, says Jason Holder
Windies skipper Jason Holder has stated that his team will try to bag more wickets early so as to put some pressure on the Indian middle-order. With the top order, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, firing spectacularly for India in Guwahati, the middle order remained untested during the chase.
Though these are early days, the ODI series between India and Windies seems to be going the same way the recently concluded Test series that India won 2-0. India chased a big target of 323 to win the first ODI and appear to have set the tone for another home series win. But, Jason Holder said that his side knew exactly what was needed in order to succeed in the series.
“In limited overs cricket, in these conditions you need to utilise the new ball. This is an area every team targets. We want to take few more wickets with the new ball. We got one wicket in the last game and if we can get two or three wickets upfront, it will help us put pressure on their (India’s) middle order” Jason Holder said during the pre match press conference, reported PTI.
There were few positives for the visitors in the first match with the biggest one being their batting performance. A half-century from Kieran Powell was bettered by Simran Hetmyer, who managed to get into triple digits, to get the team to a respectable 322 in the first innings. Holder said that the performance by the batsmen in the first match of the five match series should give the batsmen some confidence coming into the second ODI.
“Getting 320 is positive for us and we can build on that. We have all seen how the conditions can be in India. Here the par score can be anything from 320, 340 to 350 and you need to bowl ridiculously well to defend it.
“Hopefully, we will be able to repeat it (batting effort),” he concluded.
