India vs England | Sunil Gavaskar disappointed with results under Kohli's captaincy

Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar has argued that though Kohli has been amazing as a batsman, his captaincy is yet to bring any major achievements for the team. On Sunday, India lost the fourth Test at Southampton by 60 runs to hand England an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five match Test series.

Despite acknowledging Virat Kohli's amazing form throughout the series, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar is of the opinion that the team has not been able to live up to the mark under Kohli's leadership. According to him, everybody was expecting a completely different scenario with the Delhi batsman as the Indian skipper and the results have been disappointing.

The Indians were defeated by the hosts at Edgbaston, Lord's, and Southampton in the Test series while managing a win only one at Trent Bridge. Earlier this year, India had lost 1-2 in the Test series in South Africa. Sunil Gavaskar believes that though Kohli has performed remarkably well as a batsman, his role as a captain has not been upto the mark.

“Everybody would be disappointed looking at the result because when Virat Kohli took over as captain, it seemed like the team would head into a new direction under him,” Gavaskar told India Today.

“The team looked hungry to win and seemed more hopeful of doing well under Kohli. Everyone thought that he will bring in a lot more josh, a lot more energy into the team. So quite naturally, there will be questions asked about his captaincy.”

Questioning India's decision of going ahead with only five specialist batsmen in four Tests of the series, Gavaskar mentioned that such decision led to more trouble for India. He further added that it was inappropriate to assume that the lower order could score about 60-70 runs after the partnership between Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane was broken in the second innings.

“When you go in with five batsmen then you are bound to be in such a situation where you rely so much only on one player, Virat Kohli, to get you the big hundreds. He can’t do it every time, he’s human,” the former Test opener stated.

“If only the other batsmen could have played like . If any other batsman could have scored over 400-500 runs then India wouldn’t have lost Test series in South Africa and in England...The captain is only as good as his team.”
