Vijay Hazare Trophy | Vijay Shankar to lead Ashwin-Karthik-Vijay- less Tamil Nadu

All-rounder Vijay Shankar has been chosen to lead the Tamil Nadu cricket team in the upcoming limited-overs Vijay Hazare Trophy which is slated to begin from September 19. Tamil Nadu, who are clubbed in group C, will kick-off their 2018 campaign by playing against Gujarat next week.

Vijay Shankar was the captain of the Tamil Nadu team that also included the likes of Dinesh Karthik, Baba Aparajith, and Washington Sundar, who went on to lift the Vijay Hazare Trophy back in the 2016-17 season. After which, the pace-bowling all-rounder was roped in by the Gujarat Lions for the 2017 IPL due to some explosive performances with the bat over the course of the season. 

And now, the TNCA have announced that the team India all-rounder will once again captain the Tamil Nadu side for the upcoming edition of the limited-overs tournament which is slated to begin on September 19.  He will lead a side that contained a few other key performers like Baba Aparajith and Abhinav Mukund.

Shankar got his debut for the senior Indian cricket team in the 2018 Nidahas Trophy, and he will be remembered for that last-over tussle in the event finals, which involved fellow statesman - Dinesh Karthik as well. Shankar also went on to feature in the 2018 IPL with the Delhi Daredevils and scored 212 in 13 games at a strike rate of over 150.

Coming to this months elite tournament, the TN side will miss out on the experience of Dinesh Karthik, who will represent India for the 2018 Asia Cup, and opener Murali Vijay, who is playing for Essex in the County Championships. Meanwhile, youngster Washington Sundar is yet to recover from a hamstring injury.

The absence of experienced players meant that several youngsters have found a place in the squad, following some clinical performances in the recently concluded TNPL and the ongoing VAP trophy.

Tamil Nadu squad: Vijay Shankar (c), Abhinav Mukund, Indrajith, Aparajith, Kaushik Gandlhi, B Anirudh (wk), Jagadeesan, Shahrukh Khan, Rahil Shah, Sai Kishore, Varun CV, Mohammed, K Vignesh, T Natarajan, and Sharun Kumar.
