VIDEO | Steve Smith left fuming after Jonny Bairstow's misdirected throw hits him on the abdomen
Saying Steve Smith has punched a hole in England would be an understatement, as once again, the man from Sydney shattered British hearts by scoring twin hundreds. In a very bizarre moment today, a wavered throw from Jonny Bairstow hit Smith's abdomen, leaving the former skipper visibly frustrated.
"If you can't get him out, hurt him". Nasser Hussain's words on air seemed to get truer and truer as the day progressed, and funnily enough, it actually did seem like England were adopting the exact same tactics since the start of the day's play. After a Moeen Ali beamer missed Steve Smith's head by a whisker on the first over of the day, wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow chipped in with a contribution of his own later in the day, as he nailed one on the Australian's body.
On the third ball of the 63rd over, a disheartened Stuart Broad delivered the ball to the batting machine that is Smith, and for the umpteenth time in the match, the 30-year-old let the ball go to the keeper, without attempting a shot. As the ball died and rolled to the keeper, Smith walked away from the crease, trying to switch his mind off in-between deliveries, but out of nowhere, he was stung right on his abdomen by the cricket ball.
Yes, that's right, Bairstow, who apparently had spotted Smith out of his batting crease, threw the ball towards the stumps, in an attempt to run him out. However, the throw was so wayward, that instead of hitting the stumps, the ball caught Smith right on his abdomen, and the Aussie, who was caught unaware by the throw, was seen visibly frustrated and upset with the wicket-keeper for his actions.
The former Aussie skipper gestured a "WHY???" to Bairstow in frustration, and the Yorkshireman, who realized the stupidity of what he'd just done, apologized whole-heartedly, and sportingly enough, Smith instantly acknowledged the wicket-keeper's apology.
