Ashes 2019 | Handing Steve Smith captaincy not on board’s agenda, says CA chairman Earl Eddings
Cricket Australia (CA) chairman Earl Eddings has ruled out any current possibility of Steve Smith leading the side again as ban on captaincy ends next year. Eddings added that the board hadn’t even mentioned the matter at their board meetings, given that Tim Paine is doing a great job.
Steve Smith – along with David Warner and Cameron Bancroft – were handed a one-year suspension from cricket after being found guilty of ball tampering. Smith was handed an additional one-year ban from captaining the side for his role in the scandal in Cape Town last year.
After Smith's suspension, wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Paine was handed the responsibility to lead Australia in Tests. However, with the former captain’s return to the Test arena, rumors had gone around about handing him the captaincy again as soon as possible. However, the CA chairman has put all rumors to bed.
"It's not even on our radar. We've got a captain doing a great job. Steve has just come back into the side. We haven't even thought about it or mentioned it at board meetings. Tim is captaining really well. It's not on the board agenda," Eddings was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald.
Smith marked his return with two centuries at Edgbaston to power Australia to a 251-run win in the first Ashes Test. Eddings added that the whole team are just happy to have the trio back in the setup.
"We're just glad that (Smith, Warner and Bancroft) are back. That's been a focus, getting the boys back into the team. And getting them playing the right way, which they are. So that's not our focus," Eddings added.
