The Hundred | Tom Moody likely to become the latest Australian to be named a franchise‘s coach
Tom Moody has reportedly been contacted by the league’s Oval-based franchise and has agreed terms with them with the official announcement the only step pending. The high number of Australian coaches has prompted Andrew Strauss to state that the teams need to give aspiring English coaches a chance.
As reported by The Times via the Cricketer, Tom Moody is set to become the fifth Australian to become head coach of a men’s team participating in The Hundred when he gets handed the reins to the Oval Invincibles. Simon katich, Andrew McDonald, Shane Warne and Darren Lehmann have already been named as head coaches of Manchester Originals, Birmingham phoenix, London Spirit and Northern Superchargers respectively.
The decision has not yet been made official due to three counties still not agreeing to go ahead with the competition, which has put some doubts over whether the ECB sanctioned competition will take place or not. However, with more than 32 counties, which is the minimum requirement, having agreed to the proposal for the innovative league, it is most likely to come into existence.
Surprisingly, no Englishman has yet been appointed as a coach of any of the male teams, while Cardiff’s coach Gary Kirsten is the only non-Australian to have been placed in charge of a team. As for the female teams, Lisa Kneightley will coach the London Spirit, Matthew Mott will be overlooking the Cardiff franchise and Lydia Greenway will most probably be coaching the Oval Invincibles.
“Some of those teams will have their reasons for appointing an experienced coach who has coaching in T20 elsewhere in the world. You can completely understand that. There is a bit of a chicken-and-egg situation in terms of unless English coaches get the opportunity, how can they get the experience,” retired cricketer Andrew Strauss was reported addressing the matter by the Cricketer.
“We’ve always got to look for opportunities for our English coaches to get more experience than just doing county coaching gigs. They need to do more than that if they’re going to be viable candidates for England jobs. Some of the good young English coaches are involved in the England team like Paul Collingwood and Chris Silverwood. They might have had some appeal to The Hundred teams but actually they’re involved with the England team,” he added.
