Ajinkya Rahane confirmed that the plan from his side, and the entire batting unit, was to bat as long and deep as possible in the first innings after being put in by West Indies. India registered their first win of the ICC Test Championship on the back of an 81 and 102 from Rahane.

Having not made a three-figure score for the past two and a half years, several Indian fans had begun questioning the vice-captain’s place in the side. However, Rahane silenced all his critics with two crucial knocks in either inning of the first Test at Antigua.

“Feels really special. I thought the first innings was very crucial for us. The partnership between me and Rahul was very crucial. I think the first day of the game, the wicket was really damp. We knew if we stay there the runs would come. The plan was to bat, bat and bat,” Rahane said at the post-match presentation, reported Cricbuzz.

Once a permanent name in the shorter format of the game as well, Rahane did not find a place in the final 15 that went to the 2019 ODI World Cup. However, Rahane was in England at the same time, playing some county cricket for Hampshire.

“Before this, I played county games for Hampshire and that helped me. I dedicate this award to the people who have backed me for the last one and a half to two years,” Rahane added.

India's 318-run win gives them an unassailable 1-0 lead ahead of the second Test match starting from August 30.
