Legendary Windies batter Brian Lara has pointed out that skipper Pollard must look to build a team for the T20 World Cup as he believes that the West Indies must learn from their mistakes if not win against India. West Indies are coming off a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Afghanistan in the T20 series.

With the T20 World Cup almost at our doorsteps, India will look to topple the two time champions West Indies in their den to gain some momentum in the build up to the gala event. The West Indies recently were handed a T20 series defeat in Lucknow by the Afghans and will look to salvage some pride as they gear up for the battle which will kick start today (December 6) in Hyderabad.

This tour of India will be a real Test for the newly appointed limited overs skipper of the Windies Kieron Pollard, as they will be playing 3 T20s and the same number of ODIs against India in India. Former West Indies skipper Brian Lara has hailed the decision of putting Pollard at the helm as right as he justified that the all rounder has a lot experience in the format.

“Over a period of time, his representation for West Indies may not be a lot but he has played all around the World in different leagues. He has gained a lot of respect from the opposition. I didn’t see it as a bad decision (to appoint him as a captain),” the Indian Express quoted Lara as saying.

“He (Pollard) has easily gained the respect of his team-mates and he can move forward. There is a (T20) World Cup in under 12 months and you are looking for the right person, someone who can keep the ground running. He has that experience to do so. It is a good decision, but it is still going to be an uphill battle.”

While he shared that Pollard has to build to a team for the T20 World Cup, he hoped that the Caribbean side should improve and learn from their mistakes if not win.

“The West Indies are twice champions and a lot of opposition around the world are scared of West Indies in shortest format of the game.

“But he (Pollard) will have to build a team and these matches that are leading up to the World Cup, playing against India in India is always a tough proposition and he must leave here not necessarily winning but he must leave here a better team after this tournament,” added the left-hander.
