India vs Australia | Aussies are open about World Cup top order, confirms Aaron Finch
Aaron Finch has cleared the air about him and David Warner reuniting to open the Innings during the World Cup by stating that those two positions are open for the aspiring openers in Australia's limited-overs squad. Finch and Warner were the ones who opened for them in the last World Cup campaign.
Australia’s stand-in Captain Aaron Finch has said that he wants aspiring openers in Australia's limited-overs squad to assume nothing regarding the opening slots as he declared that he and David Warner are no certainties to open at this year's World Cup. With the impending return of suspended batting stalwarts Warner and Steve Smith creating plenty of confusing uncertainties about Australia's likely batting order for the 50-over tournament scheduled to take place in England.
But the 32 year old Victorian batsman, spoke as his side prepared to start their series against India which is a key tune-up for this year's World Cup, that the positions aren't decided yet and are open and up for grabs.
"Whatever we feel is the right combination at the time. I don't think anything is out of question. There's things you can juggle around in one-day cricket. I've batted in the middle order a little bit over the last little while, Davey has done it,” Finch said, as quoted by The Sydney Morning Herald.
Finch has also pointed to the fact that Warner and Smith, whose bans are expected to end next month, are both recovering from elbow surgeries.
"That should be in the back of your mind as well, that if things don't go 100 per cent right with their rehab or they have some complications with it and they're not back in time (for the World Cup)," he said.
Warner's year-long ban has left a clear void at the top of Australia's order in all formats with the likes of players like Alex Carey, Chris Lynn, Travis Head and D'Arcy Short all been trialled as Finch's partner. Carey and Short headline the contenders for opening along with Finch in Vizag, where Australia's tour of India starts with a T20I that begins today, while Usman Khawaja and Marcus Stoinis also have strong claims on that spot.
Former opener Matthew Hayden, who is in India for commentary duties, was on deck at Saturday's training session to pass on some pointers to Carey and other batsmen in the squad.
"It was great to have JL's (Justin Langer's) great mate and a legend of the game, and somebody who has had so much success in India, come back and get around to a few of the boys," Finch said.
