Theresa May on Monday received the triumphant England squad at 10 Downing Street to congratulate them on their achievement in the name of the country. Further, both nominees to become the next Prime Minister have stated that they will give Ben Stokes the knighthood if they are elected into office.

Ben Stokes made headlines after his heroics in the World Cup final on Sunday against New Zealand led his country to their maiden World Cup title since the tournament’s advent 44 years ago. Having come in when his team was struggling, Stokes scored a brilliant 84 not-out before contributing eight more runs in the Super Over.

Elections are supposed to take place soon, after Theresa May had stated that she would step down from office. In a debate between the frontrunners for the post, Jeremy Hunt and Boris Johnson, both agreed without any hesitation that Ben Stokes deserves a knighthood.

"I will give dukedoms, whatever - I will go to the maximum, to, what, the Garter King of Arms. Yes is the answer, absolutely." exclaimed Johnson in the debate hosted by The Sun and talkRADIO, reported cricket.com.au.

"Of course,” said a more subtle Hunt.

Meanwhile, a successful England squad visited the Prime Minister’s  office at 10 Downing Street and was lauded with praise by Theresa May for not only their achievement but the diversity in the team which helped them reach their goal.

"The final was not just cricket at its best but sport at its best - courage, character, sportsmanship, drama, incredible skill and even the odd slice of luck. You are a team that represents modern Britain, and that plays like no other side in the world. You have helped the nation fall in love with cricket once again. You have inspired countless future Morgans, Rashids and Archers,” she said addressing the players.

Skipper Eoin Morgan led the team to meet the country’s top diplomat amidst cheers and celebrations by the people on the street. May posed for photos with the entire squad sporting their World Cup jersey and was pictured raising the trophy in the air along with Morgan.
