Australian newspapers lose appeal against defamation payout awarded to Chris Gayle
An Australian Court has ruled in favour of Chris Gayle in lieu of a defamation payout that was awarded to the batsman by Australian newspapers. Articles published in the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and the Canberra Times reported that Gayle had exposed himself to a female masseuse in 2015.
Three Australian newspapers have failed in their appeal against a defamation payout that was awarded to West Indies batsman Chris Gayle. Earlier, there were articles published in the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and the Canberra Times had reported news that Gayle had exposed himself to a female massage therapist in Sydney in 2015.
However, the Windies opener immediately refuted those claims as he said those stories were not true successfully sued for defamation.
The NSW Court has rejected both the appeal and a bid by Gayle for a larger payout. Previously, the 39-year-old batsman was awarded A$300,000 (£170,000; $210,000) by the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
During the trial, massage therapist Leanne Russell alleged that Gayle had partially exposed himself to her in a dressing room which partially left the woman 'very upset'.
The KXIP batsman argued that Ms Russell's allegation was fabricated. A jury sided with him, ruling that the newspapers had failed to establish a defence of truth.
