Fresh off playing a starring role in England’s triumphant World Cup campaign, England opener Jason Roy is set be awarded with his Test debut in the upcoming Test match against Ireland. The English Cricket Board selectors have named a 13-member squad for the one-off Test with Ireland.

It’s been three days since England laid their hands on their first-ever ICC World Cup trophy after they narrowly outplayed New Zealand in the final on Sunday at Lord’s. Ben Stokes was adjudged as man of the match which saw England defend 15 runs in the super over which was bowled by Jofra Archer.

As the three lions now set their sights on the Ashes series, the Engish selectors have named a 13-member squad for the one-off Test with Ireland and expectedly rewarded Roy after he guided England to the World Cup title. Roy, who scored 443 runs at an average of 63.28 and strike-rate of 115.36 in the Word Cup, can make his Test bow after he displaced Keaton Jennings from England’s Test squad.

Archer, who is recovering from a side strain, will travel to Barbados for a short break before returning ahead of the Ashes 2019. Meanwhile, fast bowler Mark Wood has been sidelined for four to six weeks after picking up a side strain in Sunday’s final. Stokes has been offered some much-deserved rest but all-rounder Chris Woakes will most likely feature against the Irish.

Two bowlers who are fit and firing are veteran Stuart Broad and left-armer Sam Curran, who picked up six wickets for the England Lions against Australia A this week.
