If not Wednesday, I will work towards being fit for the Ashes, says James Anderson

James Anderson, who picked up a low grade calf muscle tear in a County match on July 2, said he is in the running to be fit for the Ashes if he cannot make it to the four-day contest against Ireland at Lord’s. However, Anderson has warned his teammates not to keep dwelling on the World Cup win.

World champions England are all set to play a one-off Test match against Ireland in preparation for the upcoming Ashes series. England and Australia are all set to kick-off the ICC Test Championship, when they meet on August 1. England’s champion bowler, Anderson, has been called up to the squad for the one-off clash on 24th. However, the Lancashire is not entirely certain of being 100% fit by then.

"I will keep bowling and we will monitor it. If it comes to Wednesday and I'm fit to play then great, but if not I will work towards being fit for the Ashes. We meet on Monday and at the moment I feel good," Anderson told the BBC.

Anderson, who is England’s leading wicket-taker in Test cricket with 575 scalps in 148 matches, had a decent outing in the last Ashes series. Australia swept the series 4-0, but Anderson picked up 17 wickets, including a 5-wicket haul. However, the genius with the new ball isn’t too keen to be caught up in the past. He went on to warn his teammates, high on confidence after the World Cup triumph, to move on from it and carry the momentum to win the Ashes.

"We realise the dangers that the Australian team bring to Test cricket, so we're going to have to be fully focused on that. We can't afford to hang on to the World Cup win. It's our job as English cricketers to try and carry that momentum on and hopefully an Ashes win will do that," Anderson added.
