ICC World Cup 2019 | Injury scare for India as Shikhar Dhawan set to undergo scans for thumb injury
Shikhar Dhawan is set to undergo scans on his thumb after he was hit by a rising delivery from Nathan Coulter-Nile during his impressive 109-ball 117. While Dhawan continued to bat at the crease, he did not come onto the field in the second innings as India defeated the Aussies by 36 runs.
India opener Shikhar Dhawan bounced back to form with a swashbuckling 109-ball 117 against the mighty Australians on Sunday. This was Dhawan’s sixth ton in 50-over ICC events. The opening pair of Dhawan and Rohit Sharma put up an impressive 127-run stand for the first wicket whereas the likes of skipper Virat Kohli (82), Hardik Pandya (48), MS Dhoni (27) and KL Rahul (11*) helped India register the highest score by any team against Australia at a World Cup.
However, Dhawan suffered a nasty blow to his thumb during his terrific innings at the Oval. The 33-year-old was hit by a rising delivery from Nathan Coulter-Nile during the latter stages of his innings and is set to undergo scans for the same ahead of the tricky encounter against New Zealand. While Dhawan looked in considerable pain after getting hit but continued to bat at the crease before he was dismissed by Mitchell Starc. However, the veteran batsman did not make the field in the second innings and was replaced by substitute Ravindra Jadeja.
India team physio Pattrick Farhart will take a final call on whether he can take part in India's next game against New Zealand at Trent Bridge on Thursday. Dhawan’s injury could mean that one of either Ravindra Jadeja or Vijay Shankar will play a part in the next match against Kane Williamson & Co.
