South Africa finally got on the board in the ICC World Cup 2019 after the Rain Gods saved them the blushes of a fourth straight defeat, in the tournament, in Southampton. Sheldon Cottrell had already send both Hashim Amla and Adien Markram packing with the scoreboard reading 29/2 in 7.3 overs.

Winning the toss, Windies captain Jason Holder elected to bowl first - a decision Faf du Plessis admitted was something he would have done as well. Both teams had decided to make two changes to their respective teams with the Proteas bringing in Aiden Markram and Beuran Hendricks while the Windies chose Darren Bravo and Kemar Roach as replacements for Evin Lewis and Andre Russell.

Having lost three matches on the trot, the South African openers decided not to take too many risks and after Quinton de Kock survived a revival via a review, the Proteas found themselves with just four runs on the board after a couple of overs. It got worse for them though as Amla edged one straight into the hands of Chris Gayle, who was positioned slightly wide of first slip, off Cottrell's bowling. As Markram and de Kock attempted to consolidate the bad start, Cottrell struck again dismissing the former for just five runs. With the scoreboard reading 29/2, the Rain Gods came to South Africa's rescue and the entire day was washed out despite fans staying in the stadium for another six overs.

The result meant that South Africa have finally managed to put a point on the table but will stay rooted in ninth position. Windies, however, will see the result as a point dropped after their magnificent start to the game. They will, though, remain in fifth place - one point behind Australia who currently occupy the final semi-final spot.
