Though it became quite inadequate after New Zealand’s first innings, at the time Tamim Iqbal’s first innings knock of 126 runs was hugely lauded by one and all. While the rest of the Bangladesh team succumbed to New Zealand’s bowling attack managing just 234 runs in the first innings, Iqbal seemed to be the only one in good touch. His seemingly significant knock was, however, thrown out of the park when the hosts came onto bat with Jeet Raval and Tom Latham getting centuries and Kane Williamson getting a double century. They also saw minor contributions from the bottom order as New Zealand ended up scoring 715 runs before Bangladesh to bat it out.

The visitors’ batting had reflected very poorly of them in the first innings and New Zealand knew that getting rid of the in-form Iqbal would do the trick for them. He looked fully focused this time too, with 74 runs off 86 balls, but had to continuously take sledging from Neil Wagner. While it looked pretty harmless and ineffective for the 29-year-old, who has been around on the international circuit for long, it surprisingly worked.

Tim Southee’s ball was always going to bowl short and this time it was behind the batsman as well. However, Iqbal, caught in two minds, went for it to make room, before realizing the bounce was high. Sanity crept into him soon and he decided to ditch it at the very last moment by ducking under. His bat was outstretched and the ball got the edge falling straight into Watling’s hands. The Bangladesh star looked stunned at his mistake and took some time to pick himself up and make his way back to the dressing room.
