The news is incorrect, MSK Prasad dismisses MS Dhoni retirement rumours

Speculations regarding MS Dhoni's international retirement has been all over social media, on Thursday, after a certain throwback picture that was tweeted by Virat Kohli. However, India chief selector MSK Prasad has dismissed all such rumours, revealing that the news is incorrect.

Dhoni, who had taken a two-month sabbatical from the sport, is currently spending his holidays in the United States, had made himself unavailable for the upcoming three-match T20I series against South Africa. He had served the Indian Territorial Army for 15 days in the month of August.

At a few instances in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, Dhoni was seen as a liability with the bat and was even criticised for his poor strike rate. Following that, Dhoni took a two-month sabbatical that made him unavailable for the West Indies tour and the home T20I series against South Africa. Eventually, the speculations of India's former captain's retirement made the rounds and on Thursday and the intensity of these rumours were an all-time high. 

However, rubbishing all these rumours, the chief national selector MSK Prasad said at a press conference, on Thursday, said that he has received no update on Dhoni's retirement. “No update on MS Dhoni’s retirement, the news is incorrect,” said MSK Prasad while announcing India Test squad for the upcoming South Africa series.

After retiring from Test cricket in 2014 and stepping down as India's limited-overs skipper in January 2017, Dhoni continued to serve Team India as a brilliant wicketkeeper and an acting captain guiding Virat Kohli and the team on-field despite not being captain on paper. but his batting has been cause of concern in both T20Is and ODIs.

Before MSK Prasad's statement came out, even MS Dhoni's wife Sakshi Dhoni also took to social media to quash all reports of her husband's retirement, saying it is all rumours.

“This selection committee is clear on one front. They will never ask any questions to Dhoni with regards to retirement as that’s not their domain. But till they are in charge, they reserve the right to select the squad and as far as they are concerned, Rishabh Pant is now India’s first-choice keeper across formats,” a senior BCCI official told PTI.

Rishabh Pant made it to the 15-man squad announced for the T20I series against South Africa, starting on September 15, as the primary wicketkeeper.
