BBL | Twitter reacts to commentators giving Maxwell a reality check as Billings escapes potential runout
It is always necessary to be in the game with utter concentration to avoid giving any opportunity to the opposition. The Melbourne Stars certainly missed out on an opportunity to run out Sam Billings due to lack of appeal as the Sydney Thunder toured at the Manuka Oval, Canberra.
Winning the toss and electing to field first, the Sydney Thunder got off to a brisk start, courtesy of David Warner and Cameron Bancroft. But a peach stuff from Beau Webster with the new ball outwitted the veteran before Usama Mir’s introduction enforced a couple of more wickets. With the Thunder under the pump, the Stars missed out yet another dismissal as a semi-settled Sam Billings escaped a close shave due to Stars’ lapse in concentration.
The third ball of the 13th over saw Peter Siddle bowl a back of a length delivery much outside the stumps that Billings dabbed late towards third man and set off for a single. However, the throw from Joel Paris hit the bullseye at the bowling end and the pair got to sneak another run as the ball ricocheted towards the V. In a twist, the replays showed that there Billings was short of the crease marginally but the Stars’ players didn’t appeal. As a result, the onfield umpire, abiding by the cricketing laws, didn’t refer to the TV umpire. Glenn Maxwell happened to be on the stump mic and suffered a reality-check on knowing about it from the commentators, prompting the Twitterverse into a discussion.
