‌SL vs BAN | Twitter shocked as Theekshana rubbishes horrendous fielding reputation with exceptional take

Old wisdom dictates you are only as good as your last game and Maheesh Theekshana would definitely agree given his fielding antics on Friday. Having built up a reputation for dropping sitters, the spinners pulled off a blinder in Dallas against Bangladesh at a crucial juncture of the game.

Bangladesh chased down a target of 125 with an over and two wickets to spare against Sri Lanka in their 2024 T20 World Cup opener at the Grand Prairie Stadium but it wasn't all smooth sailing for the Tigers. At one stage, the side found themselves facing a real threat of choking up what seemed a routine victory courtesy of a slew of wickets at the death, all of which sparked by a brilliant take in the deep by an unlikely protagonist in Maheesh Theekshana.

Matheesha Pathirana was given the responsibility of bowling the 17th over and decided to bump one short to Shakib Al Hasan the first chance he got. The former Bangladesh skipper attempted a ramp but failed to get a proper connection, causing the Kookaburra to balloon towards third man where Theekshana was stationed. However, the off-spinner needed to be quick on his feet to get to the white rock hurrying to his left and by the time the white rock dipped, Theekshana was still a yard or so away from the ball. In a moment of sheer genius, the 23-year-old leapt forward to grab the ball with both hands and ensured it stayed there even as he made a huge impact with the ground.

Theekshana was absolutely ecstatic with his effort as was the entire Sri Lankan contingent and Twitterati who were quick to point out his former struggles in the field.
