Despite the hard work put in by the Sri Lankan veterans- Dimuth Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, and Dhananjaya de Silva- England emerged on the top at Lord’s. Gus Atkinson’s fifer and Joe Root’s twin tons helped the hosts clinch the series 2-0 with a match left in the series.

Prabath Jayasuriya and Dimuth Karunaratne resumed proceedings for Sri Lanka in the morning session of the fourth day against the partly worn-out red ball. The nightwatchman failed to get along for more than six overs before Angelo Mathews accompanied the former Lankan captain in the middle. The pair orchestrated 55 runs for the fourth-wicket stand before Karunaratne got dismissed for 55 in the 47th over. Dinesh Chandimal entered the fray and took a cautious approach with Mathews to take Sri Lanka to 136/4 at Lunch.

Chandimal and Mathews grinded the old ball for quite a while before Shoaib Bashir finally tasted success in the 59th over. Meanwhile, Chandimal touched upon yet another fifty in the series, riding on a little bit of luck as a controversial DRS verdict took center stage off Chris Woakes’ bowling. However, the introduction of Gus Atkinson saw his decline in the 66th over followed by Kamindu Mendis nicking one outside the stumps to lose form. With the score reading 200/7, the hosts failed to capitalize on the piled-up pressure as Milan Rathnayake’s grit succored Dhananjaya de Silva until Tea with the score reflecting 260/7.

England opted for the second new ball immediately after the Tea break and Gus Atkinson made a difference by inducing Dhananjaya de Silva’s played down dismissal. He continued to gleam with the ball as Milan Rathnayake’s grit fell short against his precision with England needing one wicket to win and 195 runs to play around. Lahiru Kumara desired to attack with some lusty blows, but eventually was holed out at mid on off Chris Woakes with England winning by 190 runs. In the end, Joe Root’s twin tons and Atkinson’s all-round brilliance outclassed the visitors as they go 2-0 in the three-match Test series.
