Shane Warne, Pat Cummins, Glenn McGrath, and so on -- a plethora of Hall of Famers have worn the Baggy Green in Adelaide, yet no one comes close to the feats Nathan Lyon has managed there. Once a curator at the Adelaide Oval, the offie announced his return with a brilliant three-fer late in the day.

‌Australia ended Day 4 of the third Ashes Test in Adelaide with one hand practically on the urn as England were left needing 228 runs still in the fourth innings with just four wickets in hand. A host of visiting batters managed to get starts in the second innings, as they built back-to-back half-century stands after the first two scalps to be well placed at 177/3 with an hour of play remaining on the day. The period included Nathan Lyon being taken for 35 in his first spell of six overs by a counterattacking Joe Root and Zak Crawley using a range of sweeps to good effect but it was only a matter of time before Pat Cummins brought him back on, given his record for most wickets at the venue in Test cricket history. This time around, the first four overs brought just 14 runs with the Kookaburra ragging square and flying off the deck, before the inevitable occurred.

Lyon's first scalp of the day came in the 48th over when a well-set Harry Broook tried to break the shackles with a pre-empted reverse sweep. Lyon wilily dropped the ball a little short to prevent Brook from getting to the pitch of the ball but he went through with the shot all the same. The Kookaburra turned ferociously to beat the willow by a long way as well as Brook's hind leg before chafing past the off-stump to knock the bails off and invoke a huge first pump fro the Aussie veteran. A couple overs later, Lyon produced the pick of the lot as he trundled in from around the stumps to a resolute looking Ben Stokes and pitched the ball on length. The red cherry dipped and drifted with the angle profusely, freezing Stokes in his crease as he half-heartedly leant forward for a defence, only to see the ball rag square and whize past his bat to knock the top of the stumps amidst pure ecstasy for the off-spinner. Lyon capped off his genius for the day by scalping big fish Crawley in his very next over, the opener batting on 85 and eyeing a ton. Lyon once again drew the batter forward with dip and flight before turning it past the inside edge. Dragged outside his crease and knocked off balance, Crawley was left stranded in no man's land and Alex Carey made no mistakes with the gloves to whip the bails off in a flash.

England theeby collapsed from 177/3 to 194/6, and Lyon ended the day with excellent figures of 3/64 with another fifer on his homeground in his sights come the final day.

Ashes | Australia end Day 4 just four wickets away from claiming urn in Adelaideread next
Australia rode on the back of returning men Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon's three-fers to reduce England to 207/6 at Stumps on Day 4 after posting them a target of 435. Zak Crawley offered some resistance with a gritty 85 but received little support as no other batter made it past even 40.
