Slowing down the tempo is a time-honoures strategy in any fast-paced sport when the tide is going against you and cricket is no different. Delhi Capitals tried to do the same on Monday in Vizag with their backs against the wall and when the umpires intervened, Tristan Stubbs took it personally.

Delhi Capitals endured a horrid top and middle-order collapse in their IPL 2025 season opener that left them reeling at 65/5 while chasing a mammoth target of 210 against the Lucknow Super Giants. However, the pair of Tristan Stubbs and Ashutosh Sharma kept the hosts in the hunt with a steady partnership of 48-runs with the latter playing anchor and the Proteas playing aggressor. Even so, the required rate kept rising given the early struggles of the team, and when the duo tried to change the course of play with some time-wasting tactics, exhilarating action followed.

Stubbs was up against Prince Yadav in the 12th over and after one of the deliveries, Ashutosh walked up to his partner to have a chat hoping to perhaps disrupt the pacer's rhythm. However, the umpires were having none of it, as the at-crease umpire immediately asked Ashutosh to return to his mask while the square-leg umpire walked up to Stubbs to deliver a warning about his antics. While the Capitals must have felt the intervention as a positive move from their perspective, they had little idea of how the little incident was backfire. Stubbs, clearly frustrated, took Manimaran Siddharth to the cleaners in the very next over, launching two massive maximums to begin the over. The second stroke was particularly lethal, played with a straight bat down the ground and travelled 98 meters before being deposited into the stands.

Ironically, the shot led to an even bigger break since the umpires had to call for a replacement ball, causing much amusement amongst Twitterati.

The Lord works in mysterious ways -- I mean the cricketing one that goes by the name of Shardul Thakur. The veteran stunned Vishakhapatnam on Monday with two first-over scalps against Delhi Capitals after coming in as an injury replacement for Mohsin Khan just a couple days before the season began.
