Jasprit Bumrah has always been looked up to as a thinking bowler, and the Indian pacer showed that again during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata. After hitting the back leg of Temba Bavuma, he was quick to point out the batter’s height as he tried to convince Rishabh Pant for a review.

‌South Africa got off to a positive start after electing to bat against India in the first Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday. Openers Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram raked in the boundaries as the visitors ended the first 10 overs at 57/0.

But captain Shubman Gill decided to continue Jasprit Bumrah from one, and that rewarded the home side. The pacer picked up two wickets in his next two overs as both openers were back in the hut with the score reading just 62.

After picking up Markram in the first ball of the 13th over, he kept things tight in the next four, piling the pressure on new batter Temba Bavuma. In the last ball of the same over, he bowled an in-swinger that beat the Proteas captain’s willow, before crashing onto his back thigh pad.

The bowler, as well as the team, exuberantly appealed only for umpire Rod Tucker to nod his head in disapproval. The Mumbai Indians pacer was quick to go up to Rishabh Pant, trying to press for a review as he highlighted that Bavuma was short and the height would not be an issue.

But the wicketkeeper was not convinced as he responded that though the batter was short, it hit him high on the thigh pad. Despite the pacer insisting on the review, Pant finally decided in the negative, and replays vindicated his stance.

Twitter was impressed with Bumrah’s quick thinking, though the ball missed the timber by a whisker.
