The Group stages of the T20 World Cup 2026 have almost come to an end. Out of the 20 teams which started in the tournament, only 8 have progressed to the next stage. Among those 12, Afghanistan was also one of them which went out being eliminated. The team had its last group stage clash against Canada.

With Ibrahim Zadran showing his dominance, the team was able to finish the group stages with a win. It was a positive end to their campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026, and the time spent by Jonathan Trott as their Head Coach. The T20 World Cup 2026 was the last tournament played by Afghanistan with Jonathan Trott as the Head Coach. While the team expected to have a good tournament, it didn't go well. They had to face a group stage exit, despite being dominant in the last season. Afghanistan played its last group stage clash against Canada, which was also Trott's last game as the Head Coach.

Afghanistan was able to finish their innings at the score of 200/4.

Following that, Canada had a tough time in the chase. Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan were able to take 4 and 2 wickets respectively, which didn't allow the Canadian batsmen to settle. Eventually, they were able to score just 118 runs, as Afghanistan won the game 82 runs.

Zadran’s Heartfelt Gesture

Ibrahim Zadran remained the star of the game, as he went on to score 95 runs. Although he missed on scoring a ton, his performances were dominant and helped Afghanistan to end the campaign on a positive note. For his impressive performance, he was also given the Player of the Match award.

But, he knew that it was the last day of Jonathan Trott as the Head Coach of the team, and he wanted to do something to make it memorable. As a result, Zadran dedicated his POTM award to Jonathan Trott, for the valuable contributions he gave to the team. This moment won millions of hearts, and even the fans were spotted being emotional.

Trott's Contribution to Afghanistan

Under Jonathan Trott, Afghanistan played in a massive total of 6 international tournaments. While all of them did not go their way, the team was able to bring down some key performances in them, which took them to new heights.

Asia Cup 2022

The Asia Cup 2022 was the first one with Jonathan Trott as the Head Coach. The team went to finish in the Super Four stages of the tournament. They even secured key wins in the group stages, defeating Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. However in the Super Fours, Afghanistan finished at the last spot.

World Cup 2023

Afghanistan also played the 2023 World Cup with Jonathan Trott as the Head Coach. Under his leadership, the team finished 6th in the standings with 4 wins and 5 losses in 9 games. While they stood close to the semi-final spot, they suffered a close defeat to Australia.

But the team also secured some massive victories in the tournament. This included their wins against Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and England. The team had a good start to the tournament but they were not able to convert them to a positive ending.

T20 World Cup 2024

Afghanistan showcased its best performance in the T20 World Cup 2024. In the group stages, they were able to knock New Zealand out and make their ways to the Super Eight. With three wins in four games, the team made it to the next stage. Fortunately, they continued such form even in the Super Eight.

Afghanistan was in the same group as India, Australia, and Bangladesh. With Afghanistan defeating Australia by 21 runs, they were able to march into the semi-finals by winning the do-or-die game. But in the semi-final stages, the team lost to South Africa by 9 wickets, missing out on the final game.

Champions Trophy 2025

Afghanistan was also able to make its maiden appearance in the Champions Trophy. With their strong finish in the World Cup under Jonathan Trott, the team was able to make it to the same. Even in the Champions Trophy, they secured a monumental win against England. While they could have reached the semi-final stages, the team had its clash against Australia being abandoned due to rain. This ended in Afghanistan finishing at 3rd in their group.
