‌Melbourne Renegades kept themselves in contention for a playoff spot in the Big Bash League 2025-26 campaign with a nail-biting four-wicket win at Perth Scorchers on Wednesday. Gurinder Sandhu, with his four-wicket haul, and Oliver Peake’s unbeaten knock, including a last-ball six, took the visitors over the line in a low-scoring thriller. With that win, the Renegades went up to sixth in the points table with six points from six games, while the Scorchers stayed second with eight points.

After being put into bat at the Perth Stadium, the Scorchers had an indifferent start, playing as many as 11 dot balls in the first four overs. In fact, they had only one six in the aforesaid period, which Finn Allen hit off Gurindher Sandhu before being dismissed in the same over, as the home side ended the mandatory powerplay at 22/1. With Jason Behrendorff cleaning up Cooper Connolly in the next over, Perth’s woes deepened further. However, Mitchell Marsh, who had a restrained start, showed some urgency with two sixes in the next two overs, but left-arm spinner Hassan Khan ended his uncharacteristic knock of 27 off 25 balls. Though wickets continued to fall, Aaron Hardie held one end up to take the side to 100 at the end of the 15th over. However, Sandhu cleaned up the tail with three wickets in four balls in the penultimate over as the home side was  skittled out for 127 with four balls to spare. Hardie hit four fours and a six to top score for the Scorchers with a 40-ball 44, while Sandhu ended with impressive figures of 4/28 in four overs, and Hassan chipped in with two important wickets.

In return, Josh Brown’s (22 off 14) exploits in the powerplay helped the visitors to reach 30/1 at the end of the four-over mark. The opener hit two fours and a six to welcome Jhye Richardson with an 18-run over and hit another maximum off Joel Paris in the next over before being dismissed by the left-arm seamer. Though Mohammad Rizwan and Tim Seifert consolidated well to take the side to 54 after seven overs, a terrible mix-up saw the Kiwi batter being run out in the first ball of the next. That triggered a wild collapse as the visitors slid from 54/1 to 72/5 in just above five overs. But Oliver Peake and captain Will Sutherland repaired the innings with a 42-run stand for the sixth wicket as the target came down to 14 off the last nine balls when the latter departed in the penultimate over. However, with four needed off the final ball, Peake showed nerves of steel to move away from the stumps and deposit Hardie far over fine leg in the last ball of the game to take the side to 130/6. The 19-year-old batter remained unbeaten on 42 from 30 balls with four fours and the all-important six to take the visitors to a much-needed win.
