Sydney Sixers beat Melbourne Stars by six wickets in the Big Bash League in Melbourne on Thursday. Ben Dwarshuis shone for the visitors with a four-wicket haul, while Jack Edwards and Joel Davies picked up five wickets between them to help the side to a comfortable win in a low-scoring game.

‌After a sluggish start to their Big Bash League 2025-26 campaign, Sydney Sixers continued their excellent comeback, pulling off their third consecutive victory with a six-wicket thumping of Melbourne Stars in Melbourne. The medium pace duo of Ben Dwarshuis and Jack Edwards, along with left-arm spinner Joel Davies, ensured that the home side was restricted to a modest total before the Sixers batters took the side to a comfortable win. The Sixers’ ascendancy took them to fourth in the points table with eight points, while the Stars were third with a better net run rate.

After being put in to bat at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday, the Stars had a cautious start before Sam Harper and Thomas Rogers targeted Sam Curran with two fours and a six in a 21-run over. That helped the home side to end the four-over powerplay at 34/0 before they lost the opening duo and number three Campbell Kellaway in the space of 10 runs and two overs. However, captain Marcus Stoinis and Blake Macdonald kept the hosts afloat and took them close to the 100-run mark with a 44-run stand for the fourth wicket. But Macdonald’s dismissal after an innings of 33 off 22 balls, which included two fours and sixes, triggered another collapse. From 97/3 in the 14th over, the Melbourne-based outfit was skittled out for 128 with a ball to spare. Stoinis lent some respectability to the total with 33 off 35 balls, while Ben Dwarshuis, who accounted for both the top scorers, ended with impressive figures of 4/13 in 3.5 overs. Meanwhile, Edwards and  Davis also chipped in with three and two wickets, respectively.

After a brisk start, which saw them score 20 runs in the first two overs, the Sixers’ openers were back in the hut by the seventh over, with the score reading 48. However, Josh Philippe held the innings together with a knock of 35 off 25 balls, which included two sixes and fours, as the visitors were left to make 53 runs in the last 10 overs with seven wickets in hand. Though Stoinis accounted for Sam Curran two overs later, Jordan Silk and Lachlan Shaw took the side home safely with an unbroken 40-run stand for the fifth wicket. Shaw had two fours and a six in his cameo of 24 off just 14 balls, while Silk gave him company with a measured knock of 18 as the visitors reached 129/4 with 17 balls to spare. The home side’s bowling did their best to defend a modest total, with Stoinis ending with figures of 2/21, and the pace duo of Peter Siddle and Haris Rauf picking a wicket each.
