GG W vs UPW W | Twitter cannot believe as falling Sophie Devine fails to convince umpire to signal wide
Players often try their best to take the umpires into confidence with their gestures, but Sophie Devine had no luck in the WPL match against UP Warriorz. The Gujarat Giants batter made an exaggerated leave before losing balance and landing on her knees with the umpire still ruling it legitimate.
Gujarat Giants had a mixed bag after being sent in by UP Warriorz in their Women’s Premier League match in Vadodara on Thursday. The hosts ended the powerplay at a healthy score of 52 despite losing two wickets.
But the innings slowed down dramatically as skipper Ashleigh Gardner struggled on a sluggish wicket before being dismissed for a 12-ball five, and soon Beth Mooney also followed. With Sophie Devine and Bharti Fulmali having the envious task of holding the innings together while finding a respectable total, the Warriorz skipper introduced Asha Sobhana to the mix.
The leg-spinner started impressively without conceding a boundary in the first five balls, going away from the hitting arc of Devine. After successfully bowling a turning delivery wide of off stump, the spinner once again pushed one through, with Devine trying to reach the ball with her outstretched hands before leaving it.
She even lost her balance before grounding her bat and landing on her knee, but the umpire was steadfast that it was a legal delivery. The Kiwi batter was unimpressed as she immediately signalled for a review with a wide grin.
And the third umpire took over from the on-field umpire to continue the comedy of errors to leave the audience in splits. First, she came up with an ultraedge reference in a wide review before quickly realising her folly. Then she confirmed that there was no part of the ball inside the wide line, but asked the on-field umpire to stay with the original decision, by mistake.
Finally, she corrected for one last time before the umpire signalled a wide amid a host of smiling players. Twitter chuckled as Devine won a long but entertaining battle to earn an extra run while also retaining the Giants’ review.

Who was it!
Who was the third umpire? She sounded so nervous! 😭

She initially stated that she couldn't see any part of the ball within the wide guideline and ruled it a fair delivery. However, a few seconds later, she realized her mistake, apologized, and reversed the decision.#GGvUPW

Kranti Gaud’s early double (including Anushka Sharma) set the tone, Sophie Ecclestone spun her magic, and the attack kept Gujarat Giants to a modest 153/8.

She has scored close to 200 runs with bat & 9wkts with ball as well. She is only bright spot for her team apart from Ash Gardner. The veteran is… pic.twitter.com/Q5H4R5iJ7G
