Kiwi medium pacer Zak Foulkes had a night to forget in the second T20I against India in Raipur. The youngster was bashed for 49 runs in his first two overs before skipper Mitchell Santner added insult to injury by dropping a sitter off Suryakumar Yadav in his next to deny him a consolatory wicket.

‌New Zealand put a decent total of 208/6 on board after being sent in by India in the second T20I in Raipur on Friday. The visitors were well-served by extended cameos from Rachin Ravindra and Mitchell Santner, along with contributions from almost all the batters to set India a challenging total.

And the start compounded the problems for the home side as they lost both openers inside two overs with just six runs on the board. But Ishan Kishan’s stunning display in the powerplay, along with Suryakumar Yadav’s much-needed half-century, sent the Kiwis on a leather hunt.

The southpaw smashed three fours and a six off Zak Foulkes’ first over during the powerplay, which cost 24 runs. The Indian skipper then took over to torment the young medium pacer with four boundaries and a six to plunder 25 runs in his next.

With the exploits of both batters leaving no doubts about the result, and just 31 runs needed off the last seven overs, captain Santner brought in Foulkes again just to see if he could end up with something in the wickets column to cheer for. And he nearly did, but for Santner’s lacklustre fielding effort at mid off that saw him drop a sitter.

With Foulkes getting more bounce from a length outside off stump, the ball hit Surya high on the bat before ballooning towards the 30-yard line. What looked like a pain reliever for the young medium pacer, instead added insult to injury as the ball slipped out of the hands of a casual-looking Santner.

Just as he kicked the ball away after putting it down, Santner was quick to come to his bowler with apologies. And Foulkes still had a smile on his face as both shared a light-hearted moment before action resumed.

Twitter had sympathy for young Foulkes who was taken for 18 more runs in his third, and ended with 67 runs off his three overs.
