Watch, BBL | Davies enjoys rub of green after Connolly’s stunning catch in outfield ruled in negative
Though the BBL final was a lop-sided contest, there was no dearth of controversy with the third umpire ruling out Cooper Connolly’s catch. The Perth Scorchers all-rounder appeared to have grassed the ball while landing after taking the catch, with Sydney Sixers’ batter Joel Davies called back in.
Though the match was lop-sided for a final, there was no dearth of controversy with Cooper Connolly’s catch to initially dismiss Joel Davies, taking the headlines. With Payne trying to deceive Davies with a slower ball on a length outside off-stump, the southpaw was ready for it as he swung his bat in an attempt to clear the mid-wicket fence.
However, Connolly, who was stationed at the fence, ran towards his right to take an excellent outfield catch before landing on the ground with his ball-laden hand. Though replays did not raise any red flag and prompted Davies to walk past the boundary line, a closer look showed the Australian all-rounder touching the ground while completing his slide before getting up with the ball touching on the ground.
After a very long examination, the third umpire ruled in favour of the batter as Davies rushed back to extend his stay in the middle. It was harsh on Connolly, who appeared to be in full control of the ball with that touch on the landing, going against him. He could not believe his catch was ruled in the negative as a wonderful effort on the field was reduced to nothing.
That was close!
