India found themselves reeling at 82/5 at the halfway stage of a daunting 216-run chase in the fourth T20I against New Zealand, at Vishakhapatnam on Sunday, before Shivam Dube reignited hope with a blistering knock. The power-hitter announced his arrival at the crease with an emphatic maximum down the ground off his first delivery, and had struck five more by the time he brought up a 15-ball half-century. Dube had found a reliable partner in Harshit Rana at the other end, who kept his wicket secure despite being unable to connect cleanly with his attempted heaves given only four tailenders remained after him, but a hilarious sequence of events nearly ended their stand prematurely.

On the third ball of the 15th over, Dube waited for a slower bumper from Henry to come onto him before deftly helping it square of short fine-leg for what seemed to be a definite boundary. However, substitute fielder Bevon Jacobs came haring in from deep square leg and put in a despairing full-length dive to save his team some runs, eventually flicking the ball back into greener pastures while he himself ended up on the wrong side of the ropes. The expression on Jacobs face revealed the ball had indeed struck the cushions but it did not stop the Kiwis from getting the Kookaburra back to the centre strip where they executed a simple run-out with Rana having wandered off assuming the ball had gone for a boundary. While the Black Caps thus celebrated an unexpected wicket, Jacobs barely showed any emotions and signalled with his hand it was a boundary, albeit he quickly backtracked asking for a referral just to cover his bases. Nevertheless, the replays confirmedJacobs' initial confession, and the visitors ended their merry to get back to work and keep India from pulling off a miracle.
